My Retirement Party
I decided to host a Hawaiian Luau after visiting Party Planning and More. I realized that there were hundreds of possibilities for celebrating my last day with a tropical themed celebration.
My last day of work went off without a hitch. I didn’t cry at all – it was hard to fully grasp the fact that I would never be heading into work again. Especially since not much would change. I was going to stay in my home in the suburbs. My wife is several years younger than me so she was still planning on working for a few more years, and my kids were already grown and living on their own in other parts of the country.
Since I wasn’t moving to Hawaii, I decided Hawaii should come to me. I went all out, purchasing Hawaiian themed paper plates and dishes, a full decorating kit complete with banners, streamers and Hawaiian cardboard cutouts, and leis so I could make corny jokes every time I placed one over the head of my friends. Setting up took the whole day, and by the time I was done you could not look anywhere around the house without seeing bamboo or a Tiki Torch.
After work I prepared a little food, and when my guests arrived (as instructed, the men in Hawaiian shirts and the women were wearing skirts so they could feel as though they were on a short vacation) they were instantly enveloped in the relaxing atmosphere. I found a CD at a local music store with soft ukulele music and with that the Hawaiian music playing in the background, we chatted for hours, sipping tropical drinks and reminiscing about work stories.
By the time night rolled around, no one was in a hurry to leave. A few people had fallen asleep comfortably on the couch, while others stood on the balcony, ignoring the cold (we were not actually in Hawaii after all) and enjoying the outdoors.
It was long after midnight that my guests finally left. A few had to be pushed out. They did not want to leave their temporary Hawaiian vacation.
After the last person left the house and my wife went to sleep, I felt a single tear roll down my cheek. At that moment, it had finally hit me. I may not have actually been in Hawaii, but the tropical surroundings helped me truly embrace my newfound freedom.
